Next at Yashar Gallery...

Artist Megan Cedro was born in the southern swamplands and began her exploration of drawing during high school in New Jersey. It was at this point in time Megan crafted her signature style that has resonated throughout her entire current collection of work - drawing herself and her friends as "cartoons' in awkward teenage situations. To this day, the personal grasp for human identity and self-awareness in a constantly changing and amorphous body is the dominant motif in her work. The cartoon-like images are highly expressive, symbolic and often anthropomorphic perceptions of the people around her. While attending Fort Lauderdale's Art Institute for Fashion design, Megan's drawings took on an entirely new dimension - the once out-of-place awkward creatures became mature and beautiful beings - seamless elements of design in human form, entirely unique in their own disproportional beauty. Megan's paintings of stretched, stringy, and solemn young ladies and prophet-like portraits of men with beards composed of birds remind us of Tim Burton's early paintings of eccentric characters, mixed with a grace of Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Behind the expressive, large eyes of her characters a Gothic Tale of unspeakable beauty emerges. Her mademoiselles and other imaginary friends are on view at Yashar Gallery, July 9th-29th.

Texture Garden: Flora Series is a group of textural, mixed-media, floral paintings by Carla E. Reyes, exploring the cycles of nature and the human desire to capture and possess it. All of the paintings are inspired by actual images of man-made objects that were created from a variety of materials (clay, metal, stone, etc.) depicting a floral motif, set in a natural environment and undergoing the natural and chemical processes of aging and weathering. Carla’s artwork explores the color, texture, and character of natural and man-made surfaces, particularly in a state of change or interaction; which she finds both profound and beautiful. Flowers in particular, are cherished objects of nature that humans seek to preserve, but their seasonal appearance in nature, and short life span in unnatural environments, remind us of the fleeting and precious nature of existence. The work is meant to bring attention to the cycles of life, nature, and change, and the beauty of the processes that take place at any given moment.

Carla E. Reyes is a professional fine and decorative artist, exhibiting and selling her artwork in NYC and along the East Coast in commercial galleries, non-profit, and alternative spaces, since 2000. She received her B.F.A. in Restoration and Fine Arts from F.I.T., NYC. Carla also works as a decorative interior finisher, theater scenic artist, muralist, and art educator. Carla’s artwork has been featured in a variety of publications and media including The New York Times, The New York Daily News, BBC World News, The Queens Chronicle, and more. Her complete portfolio can be viewed at: http://www.carlaereyes.com
